windows 7 home premium - can not connect to vpn at work    -( ABC)
I create Vpn connection using windows. use pptp protocol on a new HP Pavilion dv6 laptop with windows 7 home premium. I get verifying user name and password and just sits there. after a few moments get ERROR 806. I have a Dell mini XP home and i connect just fine - using windows For vpn connection also. I have gone through the windows firewall set everything open for GRE - local and domain. (in and outbounds). unchecked the internet Protocol IPv6 I also have about 60 other computers of various operating systems - xp home and pro - Vista pro that connect to this vpn from remote areas of the US with no issues. Is there a problem of windows 7 home premium connecting to a domain? or is not a feature of windows 7 home premium ? I noticed also when I have laptop connected to my lan that It does not see the domains at all - 85 % of users work from home and use windows VPN connection

I am sorry to inform that with Windows 7 home (hence the word home) premium does not have the feature join the domain network. To use the feature to join the domain you need to upgrade to Windows 7 professional or Windows 7 Ultimate.error 806 The most common cause for this is that there is at least one internet device between your computer and the VPN server is not configured to allow GRE protocol packets Verify that protocol 47 GRE is allowed on all personal firewall open TCP Port 1723, IP Protocol 47 (GRE).

Do run run a third party firewall on the PC I have no idea if the home version (have never run or worked on HOME version of windows) have windows firewall, I would ASSUME they do.I will post back a walk thru if you need it.

Bubbapcguy is correct. This error code can occur when some firewall in path between client and server blocks GRE Protocol. Please temporarily turn off all firewall and antivirus program on the machine. If the issue persists, please connect VPN in Safe Mode with Networking for a test. For more information about VPN error, please refer to the link below: Troubleshooting common VPN related errors However, if the error persists, you may need involve the network administrator for further assistance. i disabled windows firewall private and public. was able to connect to vpn router. but was unable to connect to a server or map a drive.each time i disconnect from vpn router and then connect again to vpn router - i would have to reset (reboot) cable modem and ciso/linksys wireless router wrt160n - then i would be able to conect to vpn router.but still unable to map a drive to a network server. will be checking linksys router for setting for pptp and lpsec. still personal (windows) firewall is disable. Is there a way to have firewall turned on and still connect via vpn with firewall turned on?Thanks - Ricki will be later connecting laptop to cable modem directly via a network cable for testing........

Yes, you need to configure VPN and exceptions in the standard profile. For more information, please refer to the link below: VPN and Remote Access Connections Fail Thanks, Novak

I had same problem and after playing with every setting on my crappy netgear router, I fixed by simply enabling the spi firewall. That is unchecking "Disable SPI Firewall" under wan setup. Go figure.

same issue here with win 7 enterprise and standard PPTP VPN. error 806 whining about GRE. Seems the Linksys WRT160N (hw version V2) is notorious for this issue. The last firmware ugrade solved this problem for me when I was still on win xp professional. However, now moving to win 7, it fails me again. My mac on the other hand still keeps on connecting without a glitch. Seems the Redmond boys and girls need to get a grip on VPN clients. I see 3 options: 1. the router > change it to another one or connect directly to the internet or wait until a new patch is provided that solves this issue. 2. the vpn client > i didn't find one yet to try if it works using another client or maybe Redmond issues a patch for the built in VPN client 3. the OS > downgrade to XP (e.g. in a virtual machine) or choose another one (OSX or *nix) that supports age old PPTP out of the box. I've tried all other tricks (disabling SPI on the router, no firewall, disabling ip6v, ...) none seemed to work. just my 2 cents, Jan.
